Adults and Seniors Can Learn to Surf. Many adults are already in good condition because they exercise. The biggest foe in learning to surf is being sedentary and inflexible. Adults and seniors also lose body strength if they haven’t’ been active.
Preparation for surfing, surfing, and conditioning to become a better surfer are all good goals to a better lifestyle. What in your lifestyle wouldn’t benefit by you being stronger, more flexible and having more stamina? Getting surf fit is a full body enterprise. It can be accomplished patiently and a little at a time. The best plan is to work on something every day.

Getting Prepared to Learn to Surf
Surfing demands upper body, lower body, and core strength. It needs flexibility. Stamina is important so that one can last an hour or so in a surf lesson or in any practice session. More time in the water with adequate strength means more learning time and building more paddling strength.
Surfing begins with catching a foam wave. A few fast paddles gets the surfer in front of the wave. This is a quick three paddle sprint. Most recreational swimmers are not used to sprinting. I even have to tell high school swimmers this is a sprint not a 500 meter swim. The paddling is one of the most tiring aspects.
Next the surfer has to get their body standing on the surfboard. This requires pushing their body off the surfboard. Too much weight is a challenge if the upper body has not been exercised. Next the surfer puts a foot on the surfboard under their body. Once again, a challenge if their is not flexibility.
Then the surfer puts the other foot under their chest and now stands up. Strength and some balance needed here. Once standing, riding is pretty easy. New surfers just want to ride straight to the beach on a foam wave with a big volume surf board. Most adults, once standig in the proper stance have no problem riding the surfboard.
