As new surfers begin paddling out to catch bigger foam waves they find the need for Getting Stronger for Surfing Bigger Waves. The reason is simple. Bigger waves move faster and the surfer has to accelerate his surfboard.
Considerations are the volume of the surfboard. The weight of the surfer. The speed of the wave. And in real waves, how much assistance you are getting from the pitch or steepness of the wave. As waves get bigger, if they catch your surfboard, you are going, and the question is whether you are on top of the surfboard.
Beginners start with high volume surfboards to catch foam wave. The high volume reduces the amount of power necessary to catch waves. Yet, as bigger waves get faster, the surfer needs more power to catch the wave. As surfers think getting smaller boards is cool, they soon realize how much work is required for paddling. Moving to shorter surfboards 6″ at a time while maintaining width and thickness of bigger boards is recommended to keep the stoke.
Paddling is important, but so is improving the pop up. The pop up is an athletic move that requires upper body, core, and lower body strength. Surfing is a full body sport. Gym workouts with machines or free weights helps a surfer manage their weight for pop ups. There is a power to weight ratio discussed by surfers that says you must have the power to lift your weight off the board.
Advanced surfers like to get lean so they don’t sink their surfboard while paddling. A leaner body is easier to get off the surfboard in a pop up. A leaner body is more agile for maneuvers. They also want to be optimum strong to catch and ride waves. Stamina is important because it determines how long the surf sessions will be. It is also important not to get too tired or the surfer places himself in danger.
Building stamina from paddling is the best way to get surf fit. Outside the water, cross training for strength, flexibility, and stamina require various exercises. Squats and dead lifts are good for core and lower body strength as well as flexibility in the hamstrings, buttocks, and lower back. Pushups and bench presses plus cables are great for upper body strength for paddling and pushing off the surfboard. Intervals in any aerobic activity are the most efficient way to build cardiovascular fitness.
Everything is needed as surfers attempt bigger waves. Fitness also delivers confidence and the surfer needs confidence in his durability to build courage.
